Most appraisals are completed in one to two weeks, depending on the number of pieces and complexity of the evaluation. Simple insurance appraisals on single items can sometimes be completed within a few days. Complex estate appraisals involving multiple pieces or antique research may take three to four weeks.
Appraisal rates vary based on the number of pieces, their complexity, and the time required to complete the evaluation. Items purchased from Marks Jewelers over $1,000 receive complimentary Insurance Replacement Evaluations on request, and these customers also receive free appraisal updates for life.
Every appraisal includes a detailed description of the piece, photographs, metal content verification, gemstone grading using the 4Cs where applicable, and a current market valuation. Our GIA Graduate Gemologists complete each evaluation, ensuring documentation accepted by insurance companies and estate planners.
Industry standard is to update appraisals every three to five years, since jewelry values fluctuate with market conditions and metal prices. Your insurance company may also request updated appraisals on a schedule. Marks customers who purchased items over $1,000 receive appraisal updates free for life.
Most jewelry insurance policies require a professional appraisal to establish replacement value. Insurance companies accept our appraisal reports because they meet industry standards and include all required documentation. We recommend appraising any piece worth over $1,000 to ensure adequate coverage in case of loss, theft, or damage.
Yes, we appraise jewelry from any source including inherited pieces, gifts, online purchases, and items from other retailers. Our five GIA-certified gemologists examine each piece with the same thoroughness regardless of origin, providing you with accurate valuations for insurance, estate planning, or resale purposes.
