Design Process
Design
Before a mold is ever formed or the metal ever cast, the unique visions of our clients and jewelers are brought to life using three-dimensional JewlVision™ software.
Clean & Refurbish
For the creation of custom wedding rings that are worn alongside a preexisting piece, our skilled jewelers clean, repair, and refurbish diamond engagement rings to ensure a perfectly contoured fit. Whether our customer is looking to create a band to match an heirloom ring or a contoured wedding band to fit an engagement ring that was or was not purchased from our Pennsylvania (PA) jewelry store, we are glad to answer our clients’ varying needs.
Wax Molds
Next, a wax mold of the custom design is formed, and for unique shapes, crafted by hand. For design instances such as a wedding band, every contour is expertly shaped to ensure little to no separation between rings. When finalized, wax molds are inspected by both our staff and the client to guarantee satisfaction before metal casting.
Metal Casting
A reverse mold of the custom design is made, a process known as lost wax casting. The chosen metal type is then poured into the negative space and set.
Refinement
An expert jeweler files away any distortions or imperfections resulting from the lost wax casting process. During this stage, the piece will be pre-polished in preparation for the setting of diamonds and gemstones.
Diamond and Gemstone Setting
After refinement, Marks Jewelers expert diamond/gemstone setter creates prongs, sets diamonds, and ensures setting alignment. If the piece is to be worn as a set, diamond/gemstone placement will be carefully considered to ensure a cohesive presentation between the custom band and accompanying engagement ring.
High-Polish
To create a lustrous shine, our jewelers apply a high polish to the custom piece, being sure to remove and refine any sharp or less than perfect edging.
Engraving
To finalize the process, a message of our clients’ choice is engraved into the interior shank of the ring or other custom designed project.
